Percentages are rounded to two decimals and matched to the standard plus/minus scale. See every score out of 10, 12, 18, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50 and 60.
How the numbers are calculated
- Score: correct answers ÷ total questions × 100. The letter grade follows the standard plus/minus scale (A+ 97–100, A 93–96.9, A− 90–92.9, down to F below 60).
- GPA shown: the 4.0-scale value of that letter, not a course GPA. One test has no credit hours, so it cannot move a transcript on its own.
- Who it is for: students checking a test score, teachers grading a class, and parents reading a report card.

Grade Formula and Worked Example
Grade Formula
The grade formula divides correct answers by total questions, then multiplies by 100:
Worked Example
Suppose an exam contains 50 total questions and a student has 4 incorrect answers:
- Subtract wrong answers from total questions: 50 - 4 = 46 correct answers.
- Divide correct answers by total questions: 46 ÷ 50 = 0.92.
- Multiply the decimal fraction by 100: 0.92 × 100 = 92%.
- Match 92% to the standard plus/minus scale: A− (3.7 grade points).

How Is Your Grade Calculated?
A course turns your scores into a grade in one of three ways: total points, percentages, or weighted categories. Most syllabi use one of them; some mix all three.
1. Test and quiz scoring
Correct answers ÷ total questions × 100. 18 out of 20 is 90%.
2. Category weighting
Each category average is multiplied by its syllabus weight. Exams 40%, quizzes 30%.
3. Scale mapping
The percentage is matched to a letter band and its 4.0 grade points.
Your instructor may still apply rounding, drop rules or a curve before the mark becomes official.
Percentage Grades
A percentage grade is points earned divided by points possible. 85% means 85 of every 100 points, so 17/20 and 34/40 are both 85%.
Points-Based Grades
Points-based courses add everything up: 425 points earned out of 500 possible is 425 ÷ 500 = 85%. A 50-point final counts twice as much as a 25-point quiz.
Letter Grades
A letter grade is a band on that percentage. On the common U.S. plus/minus scale, 90–92.9% is an A− and 93–96.9% is an A. Your school's bands may differ.
What Does Weight Mean in a Grade Calculator?
A weight is the share of the final grade a category controls. A final exam worth 40% moves your grade twice as much as a midterm worth 20%, even if both are out of 100 points.

| C | 73% – 76% | 2.0 | Average Passing |
| C- | 70% – 72% | 1.7 | Borderline Passing |
| D+ | 67% – 69% | 1.3 | Below Average |
| D | 63% – 66% | 1.0 | Minimum Passing |
| D- | 60% – 62% | 0.7 | Borderline Passing |
| F | 0% – 59% | 0.0 | Failing Grade |
Worked Grade Examples
One weighted example, using the same arithmetic as the calculator above.
Weighted course example
Homework is 30% and scores 92%. The midterm is 30% and scores 80%. The final project is 40% and scores 88%. (92 × 0.30) + (80 × 0.30) + (88 × 0.40) = 27.6 + 24.0 + 35.2 = 86.8%, a B.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a grade calculator?
A grade calculator turns raw scores into a percentage, a letter grade and grade points. It can also combine weighted categories into a course average.
How can I calculate my current grade?
To calculate your current grade, sum the points you earned on completed assignments, divide that sum by the total points possible to date, and multiply the result by 100.
How is my overall grade calculated?
Your overall grade is calculated by multiplying each course category percentage by its assigned decimal weight and summing the resulting products together.
Do grade weights have to add up to 100%?
Not always. In a percentage-weighted syllabus they should total 100%, and this calculator normalises the weights if they do not. Points-based courses skip weights entirely and divide total points earned by total points possible.
What does weight mean?
A weight is the share of the final grade a category controls. A final worth 40% changes your average twice as much as a midterm worth 20%.
Are grade calculators accurate?
As accurate as the numbers you enter. The arithmetic is the standard percentage and weighted-average formula, but your school's rounding, drop rules and grade bands can move the final letter by a step, so check your syllabus.
How do I calculate grade percentage?
To calculate grade percentage, divide the number of correct answers by the total number of questions and multiply the quotient by 100.
What percentage is each letter grade?
On the common U.S. scale: A is 90–100%, B is 80–89%, C is 70–79%, D is 60–69%, and F is below 60%. Plus/minus bands split those ranges further, and schools vary.
