The Score to Grade Formula
A raw score is only half of a grade. The percentage is what the letter grade is actually matched against, and the percentage always comes from the same division.
Worked Example: 43 out of 50
- Divide the points earned by the points possible: 43 ÷ 50 = 0.86.
- Multiply by 100 to get the percentage: 0.86 × 100 = 86%.
- Match 86% to the scale: 87% is the B+ cutoff, so 86% is a B.
- Read off the GPA value: a B is 3.0 quality points on the 4.0 scale.
Percentages on this page are rounded to two decimals before the letter grade is looked up, which is why a score like 20 out of 23 shows as 86.96% and lands in the B band. Two decimals is enough to avoid the rounding disagreements that appear when a chart shows whole numbers only.
